In response, we’re joining the national helmet liner knitting day and hosting a helmet liner knitting event on December 29th in the shop. We’ve ordered bunches of 100% wool superwash worsted weight yarns in army-approved colors. The pattern for helmet liners can be knit or crocheted and will feel considerably more comfortable than the Army-issued liners. They have to be 100% wool for warmth and safety, but the superwash allows the soldiers to wash them so they are always clean and soft. After all, they are men and we can’t expect them to gently clean their helmet liners in Woolite can we? So here’s your chance to support our troops. Join us and the rest of the country on December 29th to knit or crochet a helmet liner. We’ll have plenty of knitters on hand to help you if you need it. Once your helmet liners are finished we’ll send it to our friends in Afghanistan to let them know their home town is thinking of them! The approved colors are black, tan, brown, charcoal or a combination of these colors only. Interested in getting started early? Here’s the FREE PDF pattern to download for the helmet liners (both knit & crochet versions are in one file) and the PDF pattern to download for the Caps and Gators. Happy Knitting! EVENT: 12/28: I just spoke on Facebook with our friend & soldier Ryan. He and the guys in the platoon are very excited about the prospect of handknitted warmth! I asked if there was anything else they needed and Ryan said the helmet liners for sure but that they also need hats and gators to keep them warm in addition to or in place of the helmet liners as they are not ALWAYS in full gear. Below is Ryan’s response to my question about anything else they may need:
We still have a little bit to do, but you should make a trip to see the store! As you can see, the website is also receiving a major overhaul and we are going to now offer online sales so you can shop at night in your jammies if you want! As new yarns arrive, we’ll be putting some of our favorites in the shop for you. As always, if there is something special you’re looking for, just contact us and we’ll let you know if we have it. The NEW Poems Sock has arrived from Universal Yarns. I’ve begun knitting upp a pair of socks for Al. It is similar to the Noro sock yarn but softer and without the hay. We have plenty of every color in stock. Click HERE to purchase online! Please be patient with us. We are in the process of updating this site to better serve your needs. Check back with us tomorrow! Today we opened the box of new yarns from Plymouth. The new Kudo yarn satisfied my craving for a casual light weight yarn that looks different than the other 3 season offerings. Now to decide what to knit with it. The drape is beautiful and the colors delicious. Three skeins will make a terrific shawl, or because of the gauge, nearly any worsted weight pattern should work. A shell to wear with a simple dress? A short sleeve tee to wear with jeans? A unique market bag? Let us know what you plan to do with yours! 55% Cotton, 40% Rayon, 5% Silk
Plymouth’s Cotton Kisses is not only soft, it’s economical. A single ball of this fluffy goodness is enough to knit a full baby sweater. The ball band contains the directions and inside the core of the ball you will find 3 little buttons that coordinate to sew on your finished project. A scant $14.99 is all it takes for this quick to knit little project that any new baby would be adorable in. Additional patterns are available too if you want to make something other than the henley on the band. New colors (lavender and lavender tweed) will be arriving in the store shortly along with the kimono wrap sweater pictured above.
